Tzatziki

Tzatziki is incredibly versatile as a stand-alone dish served with crudités, pita, or even rusks, or as a spread on sandwiches and wraps (souvlaki and gyro being the most famous)

Chef Diane Kochilas

Tzatziki is the quintessential Greek dip that captures the essence of Mediterranean freshness in every creamy spoonful. Made from thick, strained yogurt blended with finely grated cucumber, garlic, fragrant dill, and a drizzle of olive oil, tzatziki offers a perfect balance of coolness and zest. It’s a refreshing companion to grilled meats, a lively dip for warm pita bread, and a beloved staple on every Greek table. More than just a condiment, tzatziki embodies the simplicity and vibrancy of Greek cuisine — where humble ingredients come together to create something timeless and deeply satisfying.

Traditional Greek Tzatziki Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup (240g) Greek yogurt (strained for thick texture)
  • 1 medium cucumber
  • 2 cloves garlic, finely minced
  • 1 tablespoon fresh dill, chopped (or mint, if preferred)
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice or white vinegar
  • Salt, to taste

Instructions:

  1. Peel the cucumber and grate it finely. Place the grated cucumber in a clean cloth or paper towel and squeeze out excess water to avoid a watery dip.
  2. In a bowl, combine the Greek yogurt, grated cucumber, minced garlic, and chopped dill.
  3. Add olive oil, lemon juice, and salt to taste. Mix well until smooth and creamy.
  4. Cover and refrigerate for at least 1 hour to let the flavors meld.
  5. Serve chilled as a dip, sauce, or accompaniment to grilled meats and vegetables.
